The Mills & Boons World

I used to read MB's when I was really young.. standard 9th to college I think. And recently someone came over to our place and brought along with them a dozen of MBs. Now, its been ages since i last read an MB.. 10-11 years i think.. I was somehow drawn to them.. curiosity.. what would i feel like now when i read them.

Earlier.. the dark brooding rich hero... the pathetic heroine.. used to draw ooohs and aahs.. at least the hero did.. and it used to be fun reading it.. so thrilling.. and we young women would be lost in our own dreamworld when reading it .. maybe such incredibly romantic things would happen to us too!!!!

And now when i read these.. i was like.. Yikes!!!! Why did i ever like these utterly idiotic books!!!!!! They are so regressive... the women mostly shown in poor light.. the sad little ones who can never defend themselves and who would forever be a victim of some plot hatched by the vamp. I read 2 of these in the last couple of days.. the heroines were so cloying and irritating.. if i ever met them in real life.. I would slap them silly.

And nothing to say about the men.. "the MEN"... funnily enough while the world has progressed, the MB world still remains a century old.. their men are still dominating, lordly.. powerful.. with brooding eyes.. oh, how can i miss the brooding eyes.. standing out in a crowd.. kind yet menacing to those who cross them.. i wonder if we put all these men together in a room, who will stand out!!!!! They are so stereotypical!!!! Even the Indian ads have moved out of showing men and women in their traditional roles...

When will MBs do that!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to study in a Co-ed schools. Us boys were really intrigued about MB. Then we got one of the slightly 'sporting' girls to lend us one.

We read it. The collective response was WTF. Didn't know the F word then though

I haven't read a single MB!!! I wanted to growing up b/c everyone around me would go & on about them, but I was too immersed in Nancy Drew! For the better, I think :)

@Scarlett how come you missed it? Used to be so rampant during school days!!!!

I wasn't much of a reader in school. The little time I did spend reading was spent solving mysteries along with Nancy Drew...and drooling over her super hot boyfriend Ned Nickerson :P

@Moonshine: That's Scarlett's way of saying back of oldies :)

hey! i had the exact same experience! remember the days when we were hiding MBs while technical "studying"!?

but really, when u think about it now, those books were god awful! actually terrifyingly so! its a wonder any MB-crazy woman turns out balanced! i haven't read any of the recent ones but apparently, the heroines are getting more independent or some such thing... i read a really old one while in Cal - one P's grandmom's collection. i cldn't even finish reading it! that's my first ever partially read MB i think!! :D

@Mommie yes of course i remember .. we spent the night reading MBs and then in the morning surrounded ourselves by books .. our parents still do not know i think! :)

Old MBs are still better than the new ones i think.. or i used to think!!! You didnt finish it coz you got bored?

I couldn't stand it! I generally go thru a book that size in a single sitting but it was terrible!! Oh the poor girl needs saving every 3 pages!
